초록
Modern leadership theory, in particular, adaptive leadership theory, is used for diagnostic analysis of the text in Shakespeare’s Henry V in an attempt to cross-examine Henry V’s leadership behavior to that of a successful adaptive leader. One of the modern theories of leadership, adaptive leadership theory views leadership from a holistic way that integrates leadership, adaptation, system, and change. Despite the difference in the time period of about six hundred years, the process of adaptation Henry V had to go through to meet new challenges is symmetrical to the process of adaptation that modern-day leaders must undertake to successfully lead his/her followers. An adaptive leader observes, interprets, and then intervenes to ensure a positive outcome for adaptive challenges that constantly sprout up in line with the changing realities and time. Because an adaptive challenge is always accompanied by loss and learning, it is normally met with resistance from the general public; however, an effective adaptive leader such as Henry V has the competence to orchestrate his leadership tactics so that the resistance is transformed to enthusiasm and motivation. In Shakespeare’s Henry V, Henry V displays an uncanny ability to foster adaptive capacity for his followers so that learning is achieved from both the problem and the solution, and eventually enable them to thrive within the new constraints. The potential practical implications for this leadership approach are significant, considering that leadership is an area of deep interest to the corporate world.
