Abstract
This study investigates variability in past-marking by Korean learners of English using variable rule analysis. This research examines what linguistic and external constraints condition the variation observed in the spoken data of the Korean ESL learners’ interlanguage and looks into its theoretical implications. The six potential constraints on variation considered in the variable analysis were: morphological type of verbs, grammatical aspect of verbs, following phonological environment, levels of TOEIC score, and residing experience in English speaking countries. The two important findings of this study are as follows. First, the results of this study generally support Wolfram’s (1985) principle of saliency. Irregular verbs showed a higher rate of marking than regular verbs; among irregulars, the more phonetically different the past form is from the present form, the verb was generally more past marked. Another important finding of this research is that this study supports previous researchers’ claim that grammatical aspect can be an important factor in ESL learners’ past marking of English verbs. This result supports Bayley’s (1994) claim that verbs indicating perfective meaning are likely to be past marked earlier than those expressing imperfective meaning.
