The Teachers' Test Construction Practices in a College English Program: A Case Study

Abstract
This paper examined the test construction practices of 8 teachers who taught a reading course in a college English program at a private university in Daegu. One of the program’s objectives was to help students improve their English proficiency through learner-centered, four-skill-integrated, and strategy-oriented instruction. The purpose of the study was to analyze the teachers’ test construction practices and to see if their tests complied with the program goals. The data collected included the teachers’ final tests and syllabus. The teachers’ tests were analyzed in terms of number and type of the test items. The results showed that the differences and varieties in the teachers’ tests far outweighed the similarities. This implied that although the teachers tried to reflect the program objective into their tests, most of them were not very successful, most probably with the lack of knowledge about testing. Therefore, testing-related workshop or teacher training seemed to be urgently needed for the teachers. Future direction of the study was also discussed.
