Abstract
Although there is a continuing increase in attention paid to cultural instruction in the field of English as a foreign language (EFL), there is a paucity of empirical research published on the topic. Even more alarming is the absence of students’ voices about their culture learning. The present study was undertaken in an attempt to fill this gap by investigating Korean graduate students from various departments in a large southwestern university in the U.S. This paper deals with the results of a survey that examined the subjects’ culture learning experiences in Austin, Texas. A total of 166 students participated in the online survey. Survey results showed that even though students viewed cultural instruction as a less significant component in their English instruction, they demonstrated great interest in having cultural lessons, particularly, in the aspect of cultural practices and perspectives. Television was the participants’ favorite vehicle for learning about the American culture, and was also perceived as the most effective and pervasive resource for culture learning.
