Abstract

The application of genre analysis to the field of language teaching has been under strong influence of English for Specific Purposes focusing on genre specific analysis. In an effort to make the results of discourse studies accessible to the broadly based genre teaching, this paper proposes a principled way of comparing a variety of text types over a broad range of genres in a pragmatic perspective. For this purpose, relevance theoretic notions of utterance types are presented as a criterion for text type comparison and text types are compared in terms of how utterance types vary in relation to the situational contexts of genres. Then I argue that the proposed approach to text type provides a pedagogically useful tool for the practitioners of the genre-based language teaching, particularly in developing materials for raising students' sense of generic variation. For classroom suggestion, examples of text types are compared from three different genres. Further implications are also discussed.
