Abstract
The syllable has a long and troubled history in the development of phonology. It has been said of the syllable that it is easy to identify but difficult to define. There are typically three questions about the syllable: (1) how are syllables defined? (2) how does one determine syllable bounidaries? and (3) is the syllable a necessary concept? In this paper I have attempted to give a brief account of various answers to these questions. Generative phonologists have worked under the assumption that the syllable plays no role in phonology. However, there has been increasing evidence that the notion syllable should be incorporated into generative phonology. I am going to review the arguments of several linguists about the existence of the syllable as a phonological unit as well.
