Abstract
The speculation on language in India has a long history traced back to the age of the Rgveda(15C. B.C.). This paper is a humble attempt to introduce the several problems of semantics presented in Sanskrit texts. Therefore, this is not any more than a general and introductory description of the theories of meaning in classical India. Present writer would be satisfied if this paper could contribute to indue some interests for the Korean students of linguistics to study Sanskrit language and its linguistic theories. The contents of the paper is as follows. 1. words and its meaning 2. the meaning of a word 3. factors to form a meaningful sentence 4. relation between words and sentence-meaning 5. the parts of speech 6. the central elements of a sentence and the ka ̄raka theory 7. the spo.ta theory
