Abstract

This paper is to illustrate the syntactic and semantic characteristics of the Korean auxiliary verb `-◎chu(da)`. The Korean auxiliary verb `-◎chu(da)` is used in two different forms one is `-◎chu(da)2` that accompanies the complement `-ege` independent of the argument structure of a main verb, and the other `-◎chu (da)1` that can`t accompany it. These two usages show difference in many aspects, such as sequence availability, productivity, deletion of `-◎chu(da)` and meaning. However, it is inappropriate to segregate them into two different categories, since both of them hold the fundamental features of the category of the Korean auxiliary verb. Therefore, this paper explained the structure of the Korean auxiliary verb `-◎chu(da)` by defining `-◎chu(da)1` as representative auxiliary verb and `-◎chu(da)2` as non-representative auxiliary verb based on the prototype theory.
