Abstract

Through the comparison of speech level systems in Korean dialects, we realize that there is a great difference among the dialects in the usage of middle levels, that is, `ha-o` and `ha-ge` levels. While some dialects, for example, north-western and Kyungnam dialects have these two levels, others have only one. In addition to this difference, all dialects which have only one middle level show some differences in their uses. It is suprising to find that Cheju dialect has one middle level which consists of so-called `half-speech` ending, that is, `-a, -cu`. We must not ignore that many endings which have different forms from those of standard Korean are used in all dialects.
