영어 형용사 어순의 도상성 연구

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the orders of English adjectives from a cognitive perspective and demonstrate that they may be effectively explained by the Principle of Iconicity. The examples of English sentences were randomly collected from different sources for the current purpose, and the generally accepted fixed linear order of English adjectives of quality has been evaluated for its validity. After the analysis, it has been found that several variations of adjective orders are also possible. It is further argued that we need to categorize adjectives of quality into sequential sub-groups based on several aspects of iconic principles. We further note that adjective orders are not fixed, but relatively flexible, depending on the context of the situation and the speaker's perspective about the context. Furthermore, word orders may not only reflect syntactic structures but also semantic structures. We also demonstrate that the Principles of Iconicity have been found in the predicate adjectives as well as attributive adjectives.
