Abstract
The objective of this study is to provide an Optimality-Theoretic account of the wide-spread ‘unpredictability’ of primary stress assignment in Portuguese nouns. The study is summarized as follows; (Ⅰ) Founded on a frequency-based description of the phenomenon, I give the definition of regularity vs. exceptionality and uniformity vs. non-uniformity. (Ⅱ) I thereby propose as input a phonological form with obligatory phonological gender morpheme, providing a unified account of various regularities, exceptionalities and non-uniformities in terms of one regularity and one exceptionality. In this study, the ‘unpredictable' primary stress assignment in portuguese nouns is accounted for in a unified manner based on the frequency-based description and the gender morpheme-based explanation.
