Abstract
Korean allows a restricted set of consonants in the syllable final position and prohibits clustering of consonants in the same position. The two phonological patterns, consonant neutralization and consonant cluster reduction, have been analysed to be distinctive and arise from different phonological constraints. This paper argues that coda neutralization and consonant cluster reduction in Korean are not irrelevant to, but correlated with each other by a constraint Align-Ao that requires a coda consonant to be unreleased- to end in an oral closure status, "Ao" in Steriade (1993)'s term. Contrary to previous analyses, on phonetic and phonological bases this paper claims that Peripherality constraint has nothing to do with Korean Cluster Reduction; rather, Align-Ao and Max(Ao) constraints primarily determine which consonant of a coda cluster will surface out.
