전남방언의 파생접미사(I)-명사와 동사의 파생을 중심으로-

Abstract

Derivational suffixes can be classified into semantic, emotive and morphological one. A semantic suffix is different from an emotive suffix in terms of its function. One adds special meaning to the root of the word, the other represents the speaker's emotive effects, that is, emphasizing, abasement and diminishing. A morphological suffix has a special status in that it doesn't contribute any semantic or emotive contents to a word but just forms a new word. Therefore, a morphological suffix is only used to lengthen the original word or produce the lexical variations of dialects. In this study, we try to describe the function and distribution of nominal and verbal suffixes in the Jeonnam dialect and understand the relations between these three kinds of suffixes. If we can say that the meaningful quantity(it means how much of lexical meaning a suffix can represent) of semantic suffix is much larger than that of emotive one, the scale of 'semantic > emotive > morphological' can be postulated. If we hypothesize that the more meaningful suffix can be expanded to a less meaningful one and not vice versa, the scale also shows the same direction of functional expansion of suffixes. In the data examined in this study, the following expansions are manifested: a. semantic > emotive b. semantic > morphological c. emotive > morphological d. semantic > emotive > morphological If we disregard the expansion of 'emotive > morphological' which is only realized with the one suffix '-dagu', the other expansions can be summarized as following where parenthesis means the optional expansion; semantic > (emotive) > (morphological)
