초록

This study is an attempt to investigate pragmatic roles of Korean maliya in discourse. We will examine five interactive functions of maliya, namely, emphatic marker, pragmatic hedger, counter-expectation marker, marker of speaker’s negative feeling, and marker introducing a new discourse topic that is of mutual interest to both interlocutors. In this paper, we will demonstrate that regardless of whether its function is emphatic or mitigative, maliya invites the addressee to be involved in the joint construction of the discourse representation by formulating the information at hand as the focus of mutual orientation. In addition, we will also explore the diachronic development of maliya to better understand how it extends from its lexical origins to become a pragmatic marker.
