초록
This paper examines the semantic change of the Korean -n mankeum of cause in the study of grammaticalization. A particle that prototypically signifies “degree,” mankeum has been used in modern Korean as a bound noun and can also combine with adnominal endings that mean “cause” as well as “degree.” Uniconc corpus evidences that the function of -n mankeum as a bound noun began in the late 19th century and that it obtained the meaning of “cause” in the same period. As a bound noun, -n mankeum functions as a connective, linking an antecedent clause with a subsequent clause. In this context, the subsequent clause can be valid only when the proposition of an antecedent is true. Owing to this presupposed truth, language users consider an antecedent clause to be the “cause” of the subsequent clause. Mankeum is in the process of grammaticalization as follows: “bound noun > particle > connective.” It is universally discovered that grams of degree are grammaticalized in English and Japanese
