초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the change of now, which was inherited from Germanic nu. This marker is a time deictic marker and is used as an adverb, conjunction, noun, and adjective as well as DM. In this study, now will be explored in terms of grammaticalization principles and mechanisms qualitatively. In the pathway of grammaticalization, semantically, the word in question is used in a temporal sense to indicate ‘at the present time or moment’ and in the extended use of ‘under the present circumstances.’ Its meaning can be broadened or weakened or lose temporal sense in sentences expressing a command or request, or in questions. It serves as a stance marker indicating the speaker’s emotion as well. The word now that will also be identified quantitatively with the help of the corpora. As a conjunction, now that is preferred to now in frequency. We suggest that the reason for this preference is due to the fact that more explicit options tend to be cognitively favored, which can be well explained by the complexity principle. It is also shown that the conjunction now that is most frequently used in spoken genres and least used in academic texts.
