A study on the state meanings of 'noun + verb' and 'adverb + verb' compounds in Korean: A metonymy approach

This paper examines the state meanings of compound words containingverbs. Some Korean compound words are composed of 'noun + verb' or 'adverb + verb'. For example, compound words in the 'noun + verb' category are 'kimakida(기막히다),kichada(기차다), mannada(맛나다), monada(모나다), mokmareuda(목마르다),soksanghada(속상하다), himdeulda(힘들다)', and compound words in the 'adverb +verb' category are 'eomcheongnada(엄청나다), teohada(더하다), teolhada(덜하다),motdoeda(못되다), jalsaengkida(잘생기다), jalppajida(잘빠지다)'. These compoundscontain a verb whose meaning is not an action but a state of being. This can be explainedin terms of the phenomenon of 'grammatical metonymy' in cognitive linguistics. Themechanism by which this happens can be explained by the phenomenon of metonymy,where the effect represents the process (cause) and the process (cause) represents theeffect.
