Abstract

When a QP is under the scope of exclusive particles only and -man (E.g. Mary met only every professor), contrasting behavior is observed. While English allows an ambiguity for such a sentence, Korean does not. In English, there is also a contrast among quantifiers so that every allows an ambiguity, whereas each does not. In Korean, the universal quantifier gives rise to two different interpretations of the sentence depending upon where it occurs (adjectival motun vs. adverbial motwu); by contrast, numeral quantifiers are different from the universal quantifier since they allow an ambiguity in adverbial positions. This paper provides answers to these puzzles, and argues that QPs like every boy are optionally interpreted as a group-denoting term, and that it is necessary in Korean when QPs occur in the context of -man. I also argue that adverbial quantifiers enter semantic composition as part of the predicate, and that the difference between the universal quantifier and the numeral quantifier is due to the fact that only the latter has the possibility of syntactic floating.
