Abstract
The presumptive prefinal ending -gess- has developed from the syntactic construction -ge hayeos-, in which the subjects of V-ge and hayeos- are identical. The corresponding prefinal ending appears as -geoss- or -gass- in some dialects. These variants -geoss- and -gass- should also have developed from -ge hayeos-. But their vowels cannot be explained by phonological processes.Korean has the assertive prefinal ending -geos-～-gas-, whose meaning is somewhat near to that of the presumptive -gess-. The vowels of the presumptive -geoss- and -gass- can be explained as the result of the analogical influence of the assertive -geos- and -gas-, respectively. In other words, the presumptive prefinal ending -geoss-～-gass- is the result of contamination.
