초록

This study systematically investigates the effects of surface patterning on the tribological properties of polypropylene (PP) using a straightforward molding technique to replicate laser-textured patterns. Metal molds with various patterns, including relief and intaglio geometries, are prepared through laser texturing and then replicated onto the surface of PP. Friction tests are conducted under dry conditions using a cylinder-on-reciprocating tribometer to analyze the effects of pattern geometry and area density on friction and wear performance. Surface characterization is performed using a 3D confocal microscope and scanning electron microscope, and static contact angle measurements are taken to assess hydrophobicity changes induced by surface patterning. The results show that patterned PP surfaces exhibit improved friction properties as compared with non-patterned surfaces, primarily by means of a reduced contact area, which minimized adhesion. However, relief patterns with a low area ratio tend to accelerate wear due to increased contact stress and higher localized stress concentrations at the pattern edges, yielding unstable friction coefficients. By contrast, intaglio patterns demonstrate lower wear depths, as the stress is distributed more evenly, where the I-T specimen achieves the lowest wear depth among the patterned specimens. These findings are anticipated to enhance our understanding of the effects of surface patterning on the tribological performance of polypropylene and provide valuable insights for designing low-friction and wear-resistant polymer components for various industrial applications.
