Abstract
The Newly delivered warships of the Republic of Korea Navy use V-type diesel engines that meet the IMO Tier II standards. Therefore, various diesel engine techniques for enhancing performance and reducing emissions have been introduced into naval engines, making the engine system more complicated. Hence, simulation methods that can be utilized for the performance prediction of these engine systems are attracting increased attention. These methods will be useful in obtaining the optimal system configurations for the newly delivered naval engines. In this study, a simulation is conducted that uses the wave model, and deals with the intake & exhaust manifolds in a V-type diesel engine. The calculations of the simulation were compared to the measurement results to evaluate the reliability of the program. Further, the effects of a sequential turbo-charging(STC) system for newly delivered naval engines and the change of turbocharger matching are considered. As a result, it was confirmed that the STC system would reduce the fuel consumption by increasing the turbo- charging efficiency at 25% load, Further, it was confirmed that the fuel consumption per unit time of the naval engines decreases when the turbocharger is matched to 75% load, with the highest operation time ratio.
