Abstract
Welding is mostly conducted manually at shipyards; however, there are several issues in establishing a communication system to prevent accidents that interfere with safety. Owing to the nature of the workshop for block assembly, a wired communication network is difficult to manage. If the type and size of the ship are modified, it is necessary to reinstall or relocate the wired communication line. In wireless networks, it is difficult to guarantee communication connectivity within a block owing to the characteristics of steel sheet material. In this paper, we propose power line communication (PLC) using a welded line as the communication method for a system to monitor workplace accidents. The PLC is a very economical way to establish a communication network without requiring new communication lines, as it is possible to construct a communication network in any environment wherever there are metal wires. With 200 A of current flowing, the measured noise level of the weld line was below -50 dBm in the given communication frequency range. This indicates that the welding line is suitable for broadband PLC. Inductive coupling units satisfying our experimental conditions were fabricated by stacking five Mg-Zn ferrite cores. A communication performance test was conducted using a 600-A class arc welding machine at a shipyard. During the welding operation, a current of 200 A flowed through the line, but the communication speed was guaranteed to be at least 4 Mbps. In addition, a real-time thermal camera image was successfully transmitted through a 50-m welding line.
