병적 도박자의 스트레스, 대처 방식 및 우울증에 관한 연구

초록

병적 도박자들은 문제성 도박자들이나 문제가 없는 도박자들에 비해서 다양한 영역의 스트레스를 경험하고 있으며, 억제적, 즉각적인 비효율적 대처방식을 사용하고, 도박에 대한 과도한 긍정적인 신념과 태도를 지녔으며, 도박 욕구가 높고, 우울 정도가 심각하다는 결과를 보였다. 또한 병적 도박자들의 대처방식은 우울증상을 통제하면 대조군들과의 차이가 사라지는 것으로 보아 우울 증상과 대처방식은 관계가 있을 가능성이 있었다. 따라서 임상적으로 병적 도박자들의 재발방지 및 치료 과정에 있어서 우울증상에 대한 평가와 치료도 반드시 함께 실시되어야 할 것으로 판단되며, 병적 도박과 스트레스 및 우울증상과의 관계를 보다 명확히 밝힐 수 있는 전향적 연구가 필요할 것으로 생각된다.

Abstract

Objectives：The present study aimed to improve understanding and treatment of pathological gambling by comparing levels of stress, coping styles, depression, ‘Gambling attitudes and Beliefs’ in pathological gamblers to groups of non-pathological gambling controls. Methods：Pathological gambling was measured by the South Oaks Gambling Scale, depression by the Beck Depression Inventory, stress by Daily Hassles Scales, attitude and belief about gambling by the Gambling Attitude and Belief Scale and coping styles by Problem-focused Styles of Coping Inventory. Results：Pathological gamblers reported significantly higher level of stress, depression, the Gambling Attitude and Belief, craving and more maladaptive styles of coping (reactive and suppressive) than control groups. Pathological gambler’s use of maladaptive coping was disappeared when depression was controlled. Conclusion：The results of this study suggest that pathological gambler’s maladaptive styles of coping might close related to depression, and treatment which is designed to improve depression and their ability to engage in reflective coping when stressors arise will be helpful. Further longitudinal studies may clarify the ways in which pathological gambler’s depression and coping styles interact over time. (J Korean Neuropsychiatr Assoc 2007;46(2):171-178)
