초록

This study examines the visual expressions and characteristics of postmodern feminism in Madonna’s costumes as portrayed through mass media. The research combines theoretical analysis with a case study of costumes featured in 20 of Madonna’s music videos from 1990 to 1999. The findings are as follows: First, postmodern feminism views gender and identity as fluid concepts shaped by social norms and repeated performances rather than as fixed essences. This perspective is evident in popular culture and visual arts, particularly in the performances and costumes of artists like Madonna. Second, an analysis of Madonna’s costumes in popular media, framed by this theoretical approach, reveals four key characteristics embodied through specific visual strategies. These include leather suits, corsets, queer performances, religious iconography, and multicultural elements. These representations illustrate how Madonna deconstructs fixed notions of femininity and dominant power structures, positioning herself as a cultural performer who visually enacts intersectional and multi-layered identities. Third, the semantic characteristics of postmodern feminist expression in Madonna’s costumes reflect anti-essentialist interpretations of identity, the disruption of gender binaries through repetition, the dismantling of power structures via symbolic appropriation, and the visualization of human solidarity. By challenging traditional gender, religious, and cultural authorities and utilizing costume as a discursive tool, Madonna artistically conveys fluid and intersectional identities. Her fashion thus serves not merely as style but as a performative practice of feminist visual discourse, embodying the visual language of postmodern feminism.
