Abstract
The Ideology of Public Education in KoreaJung, Jae-GeolDaegu National Univercity of EducationThis study aims to investigate what ideology the public education of Korea should pursue. For this purpose it surveyed what ideology the Western society, where public educationoriginated, pursued, and how the ideology was realized, and examined what ideology wasfollowed in our traditional education. It also discussed what limitation the distinction betweenpublicity and privacy in the Western society has, and recommended the oriental distinctionbetween publicity and privacy as its alternative. The modern Western education can be explained by three axes. One axis is the idea ofequality, and the other two are nationalism and mass-production of well-trained manpower. Thefirst one is the ideology of the Western public education, and the others are its realities. In our traditional education publicity meant justice distinguished from private profit. Ourtraditional education was based on the principle that public justice starts within oneself. Thescholars in the Chosun dynasty under the Confucian tradition called this kind of educationstudy for oneself, which was contrasted with study for others. In the Oriental mentality there isno conflict between the society and individuals, no conflict between the nation and the family
