Abstract

Toward Intelligent Learning Space: Advanced Multi-useSchool Buildings and Facilities for Lifelong Learning SocietiesChoi Un ShilAjou UniversityThe purpose of this study is to illustrate the need of restructuring and innovatingtraditional school buildings and facilities into intelligent and multi-use learning space thatresponds to the changing demands of lifelong learners. Thus, this study examined the changingparadigm of schooling from the point of lifelong learning theory and analysed selected casesfrom Korean and Japanese school building plans and facilities. Theoretical analysis showed that the schooling is no longer a separated and closed systembut a place of open learning. Also, schools are aware of itself as a platform of lifelonglearning and are attempting to open up and restructure their buildings and facilities toaccomodate a wide variety of educational needs not only from the students but from the localresidents.
