Abstract
This study aims to examine the effect of socioeconomic status on onset of disability. This study used data from the 1th~14th waves of the Korea Welfare Panel Study(KOWEPS). To answer the research question, 214,791 person-years were used for the legally-registered disability onset model and 226,954 for the work disability onset model. I defined disability onset to have occurred if an individual was not disabled for at least two consecutive annual interviews and then reported disability at the next interviews. Hybrid method was employed to examine within- and between-cluster effects of explanatory variables on disability onset. I found that high income and better employment status lower the probability of onset of legally-registered and work disability. There are needs for policy interventions in socioeconomic inequality to prevent disability in Korea.
