Abstract
Recently, the importance of intangible assets is greatly emphasized, firms exert efforts to acquire intellectual property rights through knowledge capital investment and to strengthen its reputation through ESG investment. Based on economic approach, this study examines firms’ choice problem that arise in the process of acquiring intangible assets, and analyzes whether the relationship between knowledge captial and ESG is substitutable or complementary. First, under theoretical economic approach, we prove the relationship between the knowledge capital and ESG and then conduct the empirical analysis. The theoretical result proving the complementarity between the knowledge capital and ESG is also confirmed in the empirical analysis.
