Abstract
Drawing on public opinion data on ‘Korean adults’ perception on the socially disadvantaged’ collected in 2021 by the Center for Social Cohesion Education at Korea University, we examined predictors of attitudes towards affirmative action in the recruitment process for public officials and private company employees among Korean adults, focusing on the role of meritocracy. Our logistic regression results exhibited that age, egalitarian attitudes, trust in society, caring attitudes toward the socially underprivileged, and attribution of poverty to societal factors were closely related to attitudes towards affirmative action in the hiring process of public officials. On the other hand, place of residence, the presence of the socially disadvantaged at home, egalitarian attitudes, trust in society, caring attitudes toward the socially underprivileged, and attribution of poverty to societal factors turned out to be significant predictors of attitudes towards affirmative action in the hiring process of private company employees. In addition, the stronger the meritocratic belief, the weaker the support for affirmative action in the hiring process of public officials and private company employees. It proved that the relationship between meritocratic belief and attitudes towards affirmative action was not moderated by such factors as age, the presence of the socially disadvantaged at home, subjective class identification. Our study showed some intriguing results that were contrary to a priori expectations, and is thus expected to trigger other follow-up studies.
