Abstract

This study aims to present policy directions of urban design efficient for mitigating urban pathology for the safety of urban life and to live a stable life. To achieve the purpose of this study, international case studies related to urban design mitigating urban problems are carried out. There are some implications as follows: First, urban design requires user benefits from a user’s perspective and should be approached from a dimension of well-being. Second, community participation and interest is critical in solving urban problems as urban design plays a role of communicative tool among citizens. Third, to alleviate urban problems through urban design, urban design should be understood as the process of setting goals and policy measures under the overall urban safety management system and reflecting them into urban planning and solving them comprehensively. The policy directions of urban design to mitigate urban problemsare as follows: First, strategies to alleviate urban problems by approaching from a life-oriented perspective should be established. Second, design areas and targets should be identified clearly and implemented concretely to prepare urban safety measures. Third, safety management regulations to prevent urban problems should be institutionalised legally in terms of fabrication and installation considering the characteristics of urban design, and urban design ordinances aiming at the urban safety and stability needs to be improved. Fourth, urban design should be based on the understanding of the needs and behaviours of citizens – subjects of consumption – more attention to users rather than suppliers as a welfare service concept for public.
