Abstract
The major purpose of this study is to examine female farmers who have played a key role in environmentally oriented farming. The focus of this approach is to show the importance of environmentally oriented farming(EOF) in sustainable development of Korean agricultural industry. Consistent with this point, this study analyzed the acceptance of sustainability among female farmers and a variety cases of their difficulty. Female farmers who have practiced the EOF quite well accepted the eight elements in alternative agriculture paradigms. However, they showed low level of independence and diversity. This result may stem from a trend among the EOF household: trying green-house cultivation and driving large scale farming to maximize economic benefit. Over-loaded burden of labor, chronic shortage of labor power, and difficulty to find proper market outlet were the major hassles in practicing the EOF. To reduce the difficulties originated from narrow market outlets, it is recommended that environmentally oriented female farmers share information about their local community. Another strategy to overcome the outlet problem is to implement a women's network to connect environmentally oriented female farmers with female consumers. This network is especially useful to buffer the difficulties of female farmers who have practiced EOF.
