Abstract

This study examined the effects of relative similarity between exemplars and readers of breast cancer case-reports on issue perception and health beliefs. The four experimental groups for the study were as follows: (1) a group exposed to the news report with four exemplars of breast cancer-suffering women in their twenties, (2) a group exposed to the news report with two exemplars of breast cancer-suffering women in their twenties and two exemplars of breast cancer-suffering women in their fifties, (3) a group exposed to four exemplars of breast cancer-suffering women in their fifties, and (4) a control group exposed to a totally different news article. A total of 126 female undergraduates of average twenty years partook in the experiment. The results showed that the relative similarity of age and gender between exemplars and recipients significantly increased attention to the breast cancer case-report and subjective evaluation on the amount of reading of the news reports. The results also indicated that the relative similarity significantly heightened readers’ perception toward the target issue, resulting in higher estimation of the incident rate of breast cancer on the similar ages. In addition, the relative similarity enhanced susceptibility to potential risk, behavioral intention for improving their health, and information acquisition on breast cancer.
