Abstract
With regard to the outbreak of COVID-19 last year, understanding of the risk information-related communication process of various publics is becoming more critical. Based on the Planned Risk Information Exploration Model (PRISM) as a risk information seeking related theory, this study paid attention to attitudes toward seeking, seeking-related subjective norms, perceived seeking control, perceived knowledge, and perceived knowledge insufficiency. The study tested the influence of the antecedents on COVID-19 risk information seeking intention. Furthermore, it also examined whether the moderated effect of perceived knowledge between each antecedent and seeking intention could be moderated by perceived knowledge insufficiency. To this end, a survey was conducted on Chinese students who took up most of the foreign students studying at domestic universities. Findings reveal that attitudes toward seeking, seeking-related subjective norms, perceived seeking control tend to have a positive impact on COVID-19 risk information seeking intention. Moreover it also found the moderated moderating effect of perceived knowledge insufficiency. Specifically, among a group with a high level of perceived knowledge insufficiency, the higher the perceived level of each antecedent, the stronger the intention of seeking, when the level of perceived knowledge is higher. Theoretical and practical implications suggest that the antecedents of risk information seeking should be effectively used in designing health communication campaign strategies.
