Abstract

This study explores the relationship between province(Sido)-level gender equitable safety and the mental health of Korean young adults, with a focus on gender differences in these associations. Data from 17 provinces in 2021 were combined with individual-level data drawn from the 2022 Comprehensive Survey on Youth, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of young adults aged 19 to 34. Province-level indicators reflecting gender equitable safety included the safety level depicted in the Regional Gender Equality Index and estimated sexual crime arrest rate from the Korean National Police Agency records. Multilevel linear regression analyses showed that province-level safety and sexual crime arrest rates were significantly associated with depressive symptoms of young adults. Gender-specific effects were evident, with women showing a heightened exposure to the mental health impacts of lower province-level safety. Specifically, lower gender equitable safety and elevated sexual crime rates significantly exacerbated depressive symptoms in women compared to men. These findings suggest that safe social spaces are associated with better mental health outcomes especially for women. They highlight the importance of addressing sexual violence and crime to promote gender equity in quality of life and mental health outcomes.
