Abstract

This article examines the economic activities and gender role transformations of first-generation Korean immigrant women in Argentina, employing oral life history as a methodological framework. Centered on the narrative of Lee, a research participant who migrated to Argentina in 1983, it highlights the dual challenges and opportunities encountered by immigrant women as they navigated new social and economic landscapes. Lee’s engagement in the sewing and retail sectors illustrates the critical contributions of Korean immigrant women in reconciling traditional gender expectations with entrepreneurial agency. Despite structural barriers such as limited resources and socio-cultural challenges, these women utilized ethnic networks to establish businesses, secure economic stability, and strengthen the cohesion of the Korean diaspora in Argentina. The findings reveal the intersectionality of domestic and economic responsibilities, demonstrating how these women redefined their familial and communal roles while contending with the broader cultural and structural shifts of migration. This study contributes to the scholarship on migration and gender by documenting the resilience and agency of immigrant women in reshaping gender dynamics and contributing to the socioeconomic development of host societies. Furthermore, it underscores the methodological significance of oral history in capturing nuanced perspectives that are often marginalized in traditional migration narratives.
