장애청소년을 자녀로 둔 어머니들의 자기결정에 대한 인식과 관여

본 연구는 뇌병변장애나 지체장애를 가진 고등학생과 대학생의 어머니 7명의 자녀 자기결정에 대한 인식과 관여 경험을 탐색하였다. 면접을 실시하고 지속적 비교분석 방법을 통해 자료를 분석한 결과 23개의 하위범주와 5개의 범주가 도출되었다. 그 범주로는 첫째, 장애 자녀의 자기결정에 대한 어머니의 인식이 있었다. 그 다음으로 둘째, 장애 자녀의 자기결정에 대한 지원 및 지원의 어려움과 셋째, 장애 자녀의 자기결정에 대한 제한 및 온정주의 행사가 있었는데, 이 두 범주는 자기결정에 대한 어머니의 관여로 볼 수 있었다. 또한 넷째, 자녀에 대한 신뢰와 인격체로서의 존중 및 다섯째, 환경 속에서 이루어지는 자기결정이 포착되었는데, 이 두 가지는 어머니들의 자기결정 인식과 관여에 관련되는 범주로 볼 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 부모교육과 상담을 통한 자기결정 인식개선 및 지원방법 교육, 부모와 실천가의 협력, 사회서비스의 확충, 교육여건과 편의시설 확충 등이 필요함을 알 수 있었다.

Abstract

This study explored how mothers of youths with disabilities perceive and engage in fostering self-determination of their children. This study employed the group and individual interviews involving 7 mothers of high school students or undergraduate students with cerebral palsy or physical disabilities, and used constant comparative analysis of the grounded theory for analyzing data. Five themes emerged from the data analysis. They included a) perceptions of mothers on self-determination of their children, b) the strategies that mothers adopted for forstering self-determination of their children, and the challenges that they faced while supporting their offsprings, c) the reasons why and the time when mothers set limitations on the self-determined behavior of their children and acted in a paternalistic way, d) trust and respect that mothers show toward their children, e) some environmental conditions that facilitate or constrain the exercise of self-determination of youths with disabilities. This study suggested some educational and social services be needed for parents of youths with disabilities to improve their competencies to help their children extend the exercise of self-determination.
