Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare characteristics of dietary life between children with and without autism. To examine differences in dietary life as a whole and its sub-areas between the two groups, 100 normal children were randomly sampled and 100 children with autism were purposively sampled. Out of these collected the questionnaires, some as deemed inappropriate to be statistically analyzed were excluded, and the remaining 177 were finally analyzed. Findings of the study showed that children with autism were more sensitive in reaction to food, more frequent in problematic behaviors at dinner table and less in preference to different types of food than normal children, but that the two groups of children were not statistically, significantly different from each other in dietary habit. Differences in the sub-areas of dietary life between the two groups of children were analyzed, and could be summarized as follows. In terms of sensitive reaction to food, children with autism were neither allergic to food, nor negative about spicy food. But they were more likely to reject food of the other tastes than normal children. In relation to dietary habit, the former group were taking in instant food more often than the latter. In terms of dietary behaviors, children with autism were showing problematic behaviors at dinner table more frequently than normal children. This was supported by the former group's responses to all items of the questionnaire except only one item asking whether they talk while having food in their mouth.
