Abstract
The illusory correlation affects cognition processes. The Illusory correlation effect refers to the observation of correlation between two classes of events that, in reality, are not correlated or are correlated to a less extent than reported. The Illusory correlation effect has been known to affect the inferences in person or group perception. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is verifying whether distinctive-based Illusory correlation effect would occur in groups perception with cues of clothing. And it is verifying whether clothing style or perceiver's characteristics would influence in Illusory correlation effect. The results of this study revealed that subjects have overestimated frequently stimuli(ordinary clothing style) of major group and less frequently stimuli(non- ordinary clothing style) of minor group. This led erroneous evaluation which perceived that two groups had different clothing traits. That is, non-ordinary style in a minor group was more frequently presented. And clothing traits of a minor group than a major group were judged more non-ordinary. Therefore, It was verified that distinctive-based Illusory correlation effect presented in group perception through clothing style. This study verified the Illusory correlation effect in the group perception as a cue of clothing. And this study suggested that judgement of perceiver in clothing cognition may be biased by cognitive mechanism. Therefore, Illusory correlation theory is expected to provide a useful perspective in clothing cognition research.
