Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine differences in socially prescribed perfectionism, interpersonal skills, and social anxiety in early adulthood according to adult attachment style, and to examine the influence and differences between these two types of attachment styles. To this end, a survey was conducted with 429 adults aged 20-39 residing in South Korea. Data were analyzed using latent means analysis and multigroup analysis, and statistical significance was tested at a significance level of .05. The specific findings are as follows. First, significant differences were found in early adulthood socially prescribed perfectionism, interpersonal skills, and social anxiety based on adult attachment style. Specifically, securely attached early adulthood individuals demonstrated higher interpersonal skills than insecurely attached individuals. Conversely, insecurely attached early adulthood individuals demonstrated lower levels of socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety than securely attached individuals. Second, significant differences were found in the influence of interpersonal skills on social anxiety depending on adult attachment type. Specifically, the secure attachment group showed a more moderate effect of interpersonal skills on social anxiety than the insecure attachment group. These results suggest that approaches aimed at fostering secure attachment and enhancing interpersonal skills are necessary to reduce social anxiety in early adulthood.
