Abstract
The aim of this article is to read the first three books of the Twelve-Hosea, Joel, Amos-in the light of the recent tendency of reading the Twelve as a unity. Especially, we will concentrate on the image of Yahweh as a roaring lion in these three books. The image of Yahweh as a roaring lion is limited only in these books in the Twelve, as we can see in the following list: Hosea: 5:14(and 6:1); 11:10-11; 13:7-8; 14:8(MT, 14:9) Joel: 2:10-11; 3:16-17(MT, 4:16-17) Amos: 1:2; 3:4, 8, 12; 5:19 These passages can be divided into two groups. Those in the first group employ the image in order to portray Yahweh as a punisher or antagonist of Israel: Hosea 5:14(and 6:1); 13:7-8; Joel 2:10-11; Amos 1:2; 3:4,8,12; 5:19. Those in the second group utilize it so as to paint Yahweh as a savior or benefactor of Israel: Hosea 11:10-11; 14:8; Joel 3:16-17. Seeing these passages in the perspective of the unity of the Twelve has several effects. First, it helps explain the difficulties in these passages in view of the other relevant passages. Second, it illuminates what kind of roles Amos’s roaring lion passages play in the rhetorical strategy of Amos.
