Abstract
Many scholars ever have interpreted Isaiah 44:24-45:8 as the oracle concerning Cyrus the Persian king. In Isaiah 44:28 and 45:1, Cyrus the Persian king is mentioned and called as God’s “anointed.” However, the text is functioning as a hymn that God the Creator calls Cyrus as the means for Israel’s redemption, Israel in the exile. In the exegesis of Isaiah 44:24-45:8, the thesis is clear. The background of the text is of the vision of Isaiah who was in Jerusalem in the eighth century BC, the vision that Isaiah attended the heavenly court in which the heavens and the earth are dispatched as God’s agent to the Exile. The heaven and the earth are commissioned to notify the exile that the day of redemption by Cyrus is coming. Also, the text emphasizes on God who saves Israel, by the form of praise on the outside and prophecy on the inside. In the whole context of the Book, the text is in the first part of the Isaiah 40-55: Chapters 40-48 declared the kingly government of God, endowing Cyrus with the leader of a band of the nations; chapters 49-55 show that God will release Israel from Babylon to renew Jerusalem. Lastly, the text displays God’s appointment of ‘the heavens and the earth’ as his agent as well as the duplicity of 45:8 by way of the pre and post of 44:24-45:8. 44:24-45:7 declared the message of God’s messengers. The message is of God’s plan with his choice of Cyrus as his shepherd and as his anointed. In conclusion, Isaiah 44:24-45:8 is a prophetic poem for the heavens and the earth to praise God. For the reason, the reading-interpretation and application-of the text will not only be confined to looking at the oracle of Cyrus or the thought of the Messiah(“his anointed”). But rather it would be focused on the creative dignity and redemption of God, declared by the heaven and earth.
