Abstract
It is probable that the idea of “calling” made the Calvinists to live an ascetic live in which they were faithful in their vocations with diligence, frugality and thrift. It is also highly probable that such ascetic life as restrain the overconsumption and waste of time produced the accumulation of wealth. In that sense Weber’s point is persuasive that the capital was the most effectively formed among the Calvinists who practised the sternest piety. Calvin took the sanctification as the supplementary evidence of the justification. That doctrine led the Calvinists to make efforts to make sure by sanctification that they were among the elect. Nevertheless, it would be nearer the truth that the Calvinists were faithful in their vocations not so much for the assurance of their salvation as for the grateful response to God for their salvation already given to them by God. It is one thing that Calvinist had the sense of responsibility to glorify God through being faithful in their vocations, and another that they thought the money-making the supreme goal of their lives. There has been no such Calvinism as being faithful in their vocations with the consciousness of purpose to make much money. Calvinists’ goal of life was to glorify God by being faithful in their callings, not to accumulate a great possessions. Accordingly we can conclude that the Weber’s thesis is wrong in that he argued that the Calvinis’s goal of life was to make more money itself or that the maximization of the profit was summum bonum. No Calvinists have ever thought that the money-making itself was the ethical duty or calling. Neither Calvin nor any prominent Calvinist theologican ever taught that the mere wealth was the evidence of “election.” Calvin resolutely denied any idea that the prosperity in this world proves one’s election. He also denied that the poverty was the evidence of being among the non-elect. In this and other several asepects the limit of the Sociologist Weber is evident in dealing with the topic the main issue of which is religion and theology.
