본 논문은 르네상스 이후에 나타난 예술 작품들을 통해 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘의 특징들을 살펴보자 한다. 이러한 고찰을 통하여 오늘날 대중문화 속에 나타난 삶의 파편화라는 병리적인 현상이 하나님으로부터 떠나 스스로 자신의 삶을 건설하려고 하였던 인본주의가 직면할 수밖에 없는 필연적인 결과임을 드러낼 것이다. 이를 위해서 본고는 먼저 르네상스의 예술작품과 19세기 프랑스를 중심으로 일어났던 인상주의운동을 고찰하고 모더니즘의 특징들인 인간의 자율성, 역사에 대한 낙관적인 이해, 초월에 대한 거부 그리고 진보에 대한 신념과 같은 것들이 이들의 작품 속에 어떻게 반영되어 있는지 살펴볼 것이다. 그리고 피카소(Pablo Picasso, 1881~1973)와 뒤샹(Marcel Duchamp, 1887~1968)의 작품 속에서 볼 수 있는 것과 같은 20세기이후의 예술작품 속에 지속적으로 등장하는 인간성의 파편화라는 주제를 살펴보면서 신으로부터의 자유를 선언한 모더니즘의 기치가 치른 대가가 얼마나 값비싼 것인가 보여줄 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of Modernism,by studying works of Modern Art and why it has led to the pathological phenomenon of fragmentation that we experience today. The reason why this paper specially aims to study the characteristics of Modernism by examining works of Modern Art is because the development of Modern Art is closely interrelated to that of Modernism. This article, under the premise that works of art and the world-view are interrelated, selects art from after the Renaissance in order to examine the philosophical characteristics of Modernism. This study will reveal what great a price was paid for Modernism’s standard of ‘Independence from God’. Although this is still very much a matter of debate, it seems that Post-modernism is not a new ism that is replacing Modernism but the fragmentation of modernism that occurs with the collapse of Modernism. It will also be discussed that behind the of accelerating deconstruction in the 21st Century remains the modernist aims to reconstruct the Tower of Babel and achieve independence from God.
