Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of an integrated intervention combining Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) and art therapy on emotional regulation in a woman with borderline personality traits. The participant was a 31-year-old unmarried woman who reported symptoms of depression, affective instability, dichotomous thinking, and interpersonal difficulties. A total of 20 therapy sessions were conducted over nine months, with the initial 10 sessions based on MBT and the following 10 sessions focused on art therapy. Pre- and post-intervention changes were measured using the Depression (DEP) and Borderline Features (BOR) scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI). In addition, qualitative data from session artworks, transcripts, and clinical notes were analyzed to assess psychological changes. Results indicated a notable reduction in depressive symptoms, particularly in emotional, cognitive, and somatic/physiological domains. Borderline features also decreased, with improvements observed in affective instability, identity disturbance, negative relationships, and self-harm. These findings suggest that the integration of MBT and art therapy can be effective in alleviating emotional and relational difficulties associated with borderline personality traits. Implications and limitations are discussed.
