초록
During the past half century, broadly ecumenical Christians within the Protestant Church have long raised the issue of environmental degradation within their assemblies, while Evangelicals have been somewhat indifferent to these issues. According to a recent sociological research, evangelical indifference towards environmental issues is largely influenced by their theological beliefs such as a rigid hierarchy of God, humans, and the natural environment; a belief in the sovereignty of God; and a belief about the end of the world (eschatology). This essay aims, however, to demonstrate that the NT teaching about the future of natural world actually fosters a vigorous environmental sympathy that should motivate us to deal with the creation more responsibly. Three major relevant texts will be the focus of consideration: Romans 8:19-22, Revelation 20:11; 21:1, 5 and 2 Peter 3:10-13.
