Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-differentiation on social interaction anxiety among early adults and to verify the mediating effects of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and experiential avoidance. A total of 392 adults aged 19 to 34 who sincerely participated in the survey were selected as the study participants, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS Macro 4.2. The results of the study are as follows. First, self-differentiation showed a significant negative correlation with social interaction anxiety, while ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and experiential avoidance showed significant positive correlations with social interaction anxiety. Second, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and experiential avoidance were found to have partial mediating effects in the relationship between self-differentiation and social interaction anxiety. Third, the sequential mediating pathway was also significant, indicating that lower self-differentiation leads to higher ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, which in turn increases experiential avoidance, ultimately resulting in higher social interaction anxiety. These findings suggest that early adults with lower self-differentiation may experience internal conflict in emotional expression and tend to suppress or avoid negative emotions, which can intensify social interaction anxiety. This study highlights the necessity of addressing conflicts related to emotional expression in counseling settings, as well as the importance of the counselor’s accepting attitude. Finally, the limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.
