Abstract

This exploratory study using an ABA single-case design examined how an art therapy program supported by AI (ChatGPT) as a linguistic facilitation tool influenced anxiety levels and emotional changes in an adult female client, in which ten individual art therapy sessions grounded in expressive arts therapy (Malchiodi, 2012) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (Beck, 2011) were conducted, with AI employed in a limited and auxiliary manner to enhance verbal clarification through a researcher-predetermined reflective language style under therapist supervision and with prior explanation and informed consent, and quantitative results demonstrated a reduction in anxiety as evidenced by decreases in the Beck Anxiety Inventory (K-BAI) score from 33 to 23 and the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y-S) score from 56 to 30, while qualitative analysis indicated enhanced externalization of anxiety through color and symbolic imagery and increased specificity in emotional expression during artwork discussions mediated by AI's reflective prompts, suggesting that the interaction between artistic expression and structured verbal reflection facilitated emotional exploration, with positive scores on the AI Therapy Satisfaction Scale (AI-TSS) reflecting clarity in linguistic organization rather than therapeutic empathy or relational qualities, thereby indicating the potential of AI as a supportive tool for verbal organization and emotional expression within art therapy without replacing the role of the human therapist.
