초록

According to the various codes of Ancient Near East, it was a legitimate economic practice that the creditor lends people money or grain and de- mands interest from the debtor. However, the interest rates articulated in the law collections from Mesopotamia such as Eshnuna and Hammurabi law code were unreasonably high, and economic conflict within the society due to usury was getting worse. The Biblical laws strongly prohibit charging interest among Israelites in order to minimize the problems caused by loan interest and maintain social justice and eco- nomic security. Israelites were asked to constitute a distinctive commun- ity founded upon the transcending new economic principle different from the surrounding nations. The unique historical experience of Israel and their theological world view regulate not only their covenant relationship with God, but also their interrelationship within the community. Israelites should take care of the economically marginalized people, and their society should be characterized by showing compassion and consideration to the poor. God gave Israel markedly different economic principles which are different from those of the surrounding nations, and expected them to transform the secular world view of the nations.

Abstract

According to the various codes of Ancient Near East, it was a legitimate economic practice that the creditor lends people money or grain and de- mands interest from the debtor.
