이 글은 동성애 문제를 성경적 관점과 조직신학적 관점에서 다룬다. 먼저 동성애 반대를 동성애 혐오와, 심지어 회개해야 할 죄와 동일시하는 일부 주장의 잘못을 지적한다. 이어서 대표적 동성애 옹호론자 테오도르 제닝스의 논의가 성경의 영감성을 실질적으로 부정하고 있음을 지적한다. 그는 동성애관련 구절을 당대 문화에만 적용되는 구절로 해석함으로써 그 성경구절이오늘날 독자에게 유효하지 않음을 보이고자 한다. 제닝스는 왜곡된 성경해석을 통해 예수님을, 심지어 하나님까지 동성애자로 만든다. 이 글은 동성애 허용을 교회론의 관점에서 주장하는 입장도 비판한다. 그 입장에 따르면 일차적으로 정의와 자비를 베푸는 곳인 교회는 약자인 동성애자를 허용하고 보호해야 한다. 그러나 교회를 묘사하는 성경적 이미지는 가족이며, 가족이란 이성애자의 결혼 위에 성립한다. 자녀 출산과 양육이라는 결혼의 성경적 목적은 이성애자 사이의 연합을 통해서만 이루어진다. 하나님과 인간 사이의 관계처럼 낯선 타자를 발견하고 긍정하는 인격적 행위는 이성애 관계에서만 가능하며 이 행위를 통해서만 자신을 참되게 발견하고 긍정할 수 있다. 또한 성은 인간의 자의적 선택의 대상이 아니라 하나님의 선물이기에 생물학적 성과 성적 정체성을 구분하는 동성애자의 기본전략은 비판받아야 한다. 동성애 성향이 유전적이라면 동성애자가 자식을 생산하지 못한다는 점에 비추어 볼 때 동성애자는 더 이상 존재하지 않아야 한다. 또한 설령 동성애 성향이 유전적이거나 유전자 변형에 의한 것이라 해도 동성애 성향과 동성애 행위가 구분되어야 한다. 특정 질병에 취약한 유전자를 지닌다고 해서그 질병에 걸리는 것이 마땅한 것은 아니기 때문이다. 동성애 성향을 지닌사람이 동성애 행위를 거부해야 하는 책임을 수행할 때 교회는 그런 사람에게 전문적이고 체계적인 도움을 제공해야 한다. 이 과정이 오래 걸리고 힘들더라도 교회는 인내와 사랑을 유지해야 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to show how Korean church should deal with the problem of homosexuality from the biblical and ecclesiological perspective. My critic against Theodore W. Jennings, Jr’s interpretation of some biblical passage about homosexuality lies in that his interpretation implies the practical denial of the inspiration of the Scriptures. His distorted interpretation makes Jesus and God homosexuals, which shows that he starts from the firm assumption that homosexuality should be recommended in the Scriptures. My critic is also against those who suggest that the concept of church as the place of justice and mercy supports that homosexuals should be acknowledge and supported by the church. I think that one of the main images of church is that of family which consists of the marriage between man and woman. The relationship between God and man shows a personal relationship found in the act of finding and affirming the strange other. Not the homosexual but the heterosexual relationship has such a personal relationship. The distinction between biological sexuality and sociological gender should be criticized on the ground that sexuality is not the object of human choice but the gift of God. One of crucial critics against homosexuality is that the homosexual orientation is not genetic. The opinion that homosexuality is genetic implies that homosexuals cannot be exist any more, for homosexuals cannot transfer their genes to next generation. The suggestion that homosexuality is genetically modified cannot prove that homosexuals do not have any responsibility for their homosexual acts, for there is a distinction between homosexual orientation and homosexual act. An attempt to prove that makes a naturalistic fallacy. Church should show enduring love and systematic care and support for homosexuals who are expected to repent their homosexual acts and return to church.
