Abstract
German pietism, which developed from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, had significant influence on Christian thoughts and lives, as well as church music, especially German hymns. Several church music scholars have been interested in the relationship between Pietism and Bach’s church music, which has hardly been studied in the field of church music in Korea, as the period of German pietism overlaps with Bach’s life. It was a time of conflict between Lutheran orthodoxy and pietism, and their theological dispute resulted in practical differences in worship and church music. Bach first encountered pietism in Ohrdruf and consequently fell in a dilemma between orthodoxy and pietism in Mühlhausen. Concluding that it was difficult for him to develop church music as an art in Mühlhausen, he left there after about a year. His resignation letter submitted to the city council clearly shows his sense of calling and passion for church music. Bach maintained his orthodox Lutheran faith during the conflict between orthodoxy and pietism, but he accepted pietistic elements and integrated them into his religious life and musical works. Although there exists a large temporal gap, the life and music of Bach will serve as a model example for today’s church musicians, who also are amidst various practical conflicts in their lives.
